‘Michael’s work just captures the mood of the person in a very clever way with an exactness of their body language.’

Carolyn Miller - Artist.

Life as a Painter in Rural Mid- Wales

I am not really a materialistic person but like to find the soul in people, landscapes and objects that I encounter. Deep down I am always in search of the psychological virtues of calm, harmony and dignity in an environment or space…..I am in search of a light and want to see how bright it can shine. My realism, my real world is strongly orientated around aesthetics and magical philosophical thinking.

Mihangel is the Welsh word for ‘Michael’ and I the painter Michael Mihangel was born in North East England and I am now living in Mid- Wales. I have always had a wonderfully wealthy passion for drawing and painting. I had a happy upbringing on the brim of the North Yorkshire Moors before moving on to study a Fine Art Degree in Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District.

During the past 18 years I have been living in beautiful rural Powys in Wales and working as an art teacher as well as establishing my own practice as an artist. I now class Wales as my home but no matter where I am I am drawn to visually respond the environments that I encounter and the characters that occupy them.

My tastes are wide and varied and I am enormously interested in philosophy, civilization and culture and have influences in music, architecture, film, theatre, textiles and particularly in the painters, Joan Mitchell, Gwen John, Frida Kahlo, Chaim Soutine, Cezanne, Monet, Amedeo Modigliani, the Bloomsbury Group, Andy Warhol, Jean -Michel Basquiat, A R Penck and Frank Stella to name but a few.

‘Life is short so keep smiling, be kind and always try to be helpful….. and forever be a free spirit.’

‘‘I am compelled to draw and paint particularly from observation purely from a point of fascination. Every living thing is entitled to be celebrated in its existence, in that moment, and in that environment. The natural world deserves our empathy, sensory attention and imagination with a shameless generosity and accuracy.’’
